The 59 year-old Keene passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in his sleep at his Los Angeles area home on Wednesday. Keene \u2013 who recorded for Geffen, Matador Records, and Second Motion, among others \u2013 built an impressive and acclaimed catalog over the course of his nearly 40-year career, spanning eleven full-lengths, four EPs, three compilations, and a live album. \u00a0 \u00a0 <br><br>Hailed by fans, critics and fellow musicians for the moving and consistently high quality of his pop songcraft, he was also consummate rock and roller. Over the course of his career, Keene worked with a range of artists who admired his work, including The Replacements\u2019 Paul Westerberg, R.E.M.\u2019s Peter Buck, Guided by Voices\u2019 Robert Pollard, the Goo Goo Dolls, and the Gin Blossoms, among others.<br><br>Born in Evanston, Illinois and raised in Bethesda, Maryland, Keene launched his career in the late-\u201870s as a guitarist with a series of Washington D.C.-area combos including the Rage and the Razz, before hitting the national scene as a solo act in 1982 with the release of his debut <em>Strange Alliance<\/em>.<br><br>In 1984, Keene followed with a six-song effort titled <em>Places That Are Gone\u00a0<\/em>(Dolphin). Blatantly romantic, unapologetically melodic, bittersweet but absolutely invigorating, the record landed high on the CMJ charts and atop the Village Voice Pazz &amp; Jop EP of the Year poll. \u00a0 <br><br>Keene was soon being courted by major labels and ultimately signed with Geffen Records for 1986\u2019s\u00a0<em>Songs From the Film<\/em>. Produced by Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick, the album spawned two MTV videos and spent 12 weeks on Billboard\u2019s Top 200. The accompanying\u00a0<em>Run Now<\/em>\u00a0EP led to the singer as well as its title track appearing in the Anthony Michael Hall movie\u00a0<em>Out of Bounds<\/em>. \u00a0 <br><br>For 1989\u2019s\u00a0<em>Based on Happy Times<\/em>\u00a0(Geffen) Keene headed down to Ardent Studios in Memphis to record with producers John Hampton and Joe Hardy. The ironically titled disc is the darkest album in the Keene catalog, with heavier guitars, fewer jangles, and a more brooding, fatalistic outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"652\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tommykeene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-23-at-7.18.09-PM.png?resize=652%2C596\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tommykeene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-23-at-7.18.09-PM.png?w=652&amp;ssl=1 652w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tommykeene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-23-at-7.18.09-PM.png?resize=300%2C274&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tommykeene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Screen-Shot-2017-11-23-at-7.18.09-PM.png?resize=273%2C250&amp;ssl=1 273w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><figcaption>Tommy in Japan 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the album\u2019s release, Keene took a break from recording, eventually signing with Matador for 1996\u2019s acclaimed \u201ccomeback\u201d\u00a0<em>Ten Years After\u00a0<\/em>and its 1998 follow-up\u00a0<em>Isolation Party<\/em>. Between 2000 and 2004 he released a live disc called\u00a0<em>Showtunes\u00a0<\/em>(Parasol),\u00a0<em>The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down<\/em>\u00a0(SpinArt) and rarities\/demos\/unreleased-tracks collection\u00a0<em>Drowning: A Tommy Keene Miscellany\u00a0<\/em>(Not Lame). \u00a0 <br><br>Keene also developed a career as in-demand sideman: he was a touring member of Sony\/Creation-signed rockers Velvet Crush, and appeared on their 1995 live album\u00a0<em>Rock Concert<\/em>. In 1996 he joined Paul Westerberg\u2019s band, handling lead guitar duties on the\u00a0<em>Eventually\u00a0<\/em>tour and making appearances on \u201cThe Larry Sanders Show\u201d and \u201cThe Late Show with David Letterman.\u201d \u00a0A trek opening for Guided By Voices led to his joining Robert Pollard in 2006 as a touring member of Pollards post-GBV band the Ascended Masters and,\u00a0two years later, Boston Spaceships. \u00a0 <br><br>Meanwhile, 2006 also saw the release of Keene\u2019s\u00a0<em>Crashing the Ether<\/em>\u00a0(Eleven Thirty), along with\u00a0<em>Blues and Boogie Shoes<\/em>, a collaboration with Pollard under the Keene Brothers moniker. He put out a double-disc career-spanning set in 2011,\u00a0<em>Tommy Keene You Hear Me: A Retrospective 1983-2009<\/em>.<br> \u00a0 <br>In recent years, Keene continued to deliver a series of accomplished solo records for the Second Motion\/School Kids labels, including 2015\u2019s\u00a0<em>Laugh in the Dark<\/em>, his final studio album.
